Understand PSI, GPM and your cleaning setup

Compare the complete pressure-washer specification. PSI describes pressure and GPM describes water flow, so assess both alongside the pump, engine and intended application.

Start with the cleaning task

List the surfaces you intend to clean and check their care instructions. Delicate finishes, painted surfaces and outdoor furniture can require different settings and accessories from concrete. Follow the pressure-washer manual for nozzle selection, working distance and detergent use.

Read PSI and water-flow ratings together

PSI and GPM measure different characteristics. Compare both ratings and confirm whether the listed figures describe maximum or operating performance. Match the machine to the required water supply and intended application.

Compare power sources and pumps

Review the electrical or fuel requirements for each model. Check pump specifications, maintenance requirements, hose length, connections and storage space. Use gas-powered equipment outdoors in accordance with its manufacturer instructions.

Confirm accessory compatibility

Surface cleaners, extension hoses and other attachments have pressure, flow and connection requirements. Check compatibility with the exact model. Read the included-components list rather than assuming that an accessory pictured separately is supplied.
